diploid
adj 1: of a cell or organism having two sets of chromosomes or
twice the haploid number; "diploid somatic cells" [ant:
{haploid}, {haploidic}, {monoploid}, {polyploid}]
n 1: (genetics) an organism or cell having the normal amount of
DNA per cell; i.e., two sets of chromosomes or twice the
haploid number

diploid \dip"loid\ (d[i^]p"loid), n. [Gr. diplo`os twofold
-oid.]
1. (Crystallog.) A solid bounded by twenty-four similar
quadrilateral faces. It is a hemihedral form of the
hexoctahedron.
[1913 Webster]

2. (Biol.) a cell or organism having a number of chromosomes
corresponding to two copies of each chromosome; a diploid
cell or organism.
[PJC]

A: I'm not interested in diploids.
B: Oh, how I wish your parents had felt the same
way!

diploid \dip"loid\ (d[i^]p"loid), a. [Gr. diplo`os twofold
-oid.] (Biol.)
having a number of chromosomes corresponding to two copies of
each chromosome; having double the basic number of
chromosomes, as seen in a haploid cell. Contrasted to
{haploid} and {polyploid}.

Note: in diploid cells, although the number of chromosomes is
double that in haploid cells, it is not always true
that there are two copies of every chromosome, since
the two sex chromosomes in males will differ from each
other. In females, and for other chromosomes, however,
there are generally two copies of each, giving rise to
the classical hereditary and sorting patterns of
Mendelian genetics.

  • Diploid vs Haploid - Difference and Comparison | Diffen
Diploid cells contain two complete sets (2n) of chromosomes Haploid cells have half the number of chromosomes (n) as diploid - i e a haploid cell contains only one complete set of chromosomes Diploid cells reproduce by mitosis making daughter cells that are exact replicas
  • Diploid - Definition and Examples - Biology Dictionary
Diploid describes a cell or nucleus which contains two copies of genetic material, or a complete set of chromosomes, paired with their homologs (chromosome carrying the same information from the other parent)
  • Diploid - National Human Genome Research Institute
Diploid is a term that refers to the presence of two complete sets of chromosomes in an organism’s cells, with each parent contributing a chromosome to each pair Humans are diploid, and most of the body’s cells contain 23 chromosomes pairs
  • Ploidy - Wikipedia
Most animals are diploid, but male bees, wasps, and ants are haploid organisms because they develop from unfertilized, haploid eggs, while females (workers and queens) are diploid, making their system haplodiploid
  • Diploid vs. Haploid: 12 Major Differences, Examples - Microbe Notes
Diploid Definition Diploid is a cell or organism that has paired chromosomes, one from each parent In most organisms, the somatic cells are diploid, whereas the sex cells tend to be haploid The diploid cells have two homologous copies of the two chromosomes obtained from two parents
  • Haploid vs Diploid - BYJUS
The most obvious difference between Haploid and Diploid is the number of chromosome sets that are found in the nucleus Haploid cells are those that have only a single set of chromosomes while diploid cells have two sets of chromosomes
  • Diploid Cell Definition and Example - ThoughtCo
A diploid cell replicates or reproduces through mitosis It preserves its diploid chromosome number by making an identical copy of its chromosomes and distributing its DNA equally between two daughter cells Animal organisms are typically diploid for their entire life cycles but plant life cycles alternate between haploid and diploid stages
  • diploid | Learn Science at Scitable - Nature
Diploid describes a cell that contain two copies of each chromosome Nearly all the cells in the human body carry two homologous, or similar, copies of each chromosome The only exception
  • Diploid Definition and Examples - Biology Online Dictionary
What is diploid? How many chromosomes are in a human cell? Ploidy refers to the number of sets of homologous chromosomes in the genome of a cell or an organism Each set is designated by n The term diploid refers to a cell or an organism that has two sets of chromosomes
