byte
n 1: a sequence of 8 bits (enough to represent one character of
alphanumeric data) processed as a single unit of
information

/bi:t/ (B) A component in the machine {data hierarchy}
larger than a {bit} and usually smaller than a {word}; now
nearly always eight bits and the smallest addressable unit of
storage. A byte typically holds one {character}.

A byte may be 9 bits on 36-bit computers. Some older
architectures used "byte" for quantities of 6 or 7 bits, and
the PDP-10 and IBM 7030 supported "bytes" that were actually
{bit-fields} of 1 to 36 (or 64) bits! These usages are now
obsolete, and even 9-bit bytes have become rare in the general
trend toward power-of-2 word sizes.

The term was coined by Werner Buchholz in 1956 during the
early design phase for the {IBM} {Stretch} computer. It was a
mutation of the word "bite" intended to avoid confusion with
"bit". In 1962 he described it as "a group of bits used to
encode a character, or the number of bits transmitted in
parallel to and from input-output units". The move to an
8-bit byte happened in late 1956, and this size was later
adopted and promulgated as a standard by the {System/360}
{operating system} (announced April 1964).

James S. Jones adds:

I am sure I read in a mid-1970's brochure by IBM that outlined
the history of computers that BYTE was an acronym that stood
for "Bit asYnchronous Transmission E..?" which related to
width of the bus between the Stretch CPU and its CRT-memory
(prior to Core).

Terry Carr says:

In the early days IBM taught that a series of bits transferred
together (like so many yoked oxen) formed a Binary Yoked
Transfer Element (BYTE).

[True origin? First 8-bit byte architecture?]

  • . net - What is a byte [] array? - Stack Overflow
A byte is 8 bits, and an array of byte, is an array of bytes It really is that simple The thing to keep in mind is that char and byte are different In old C style, a char and byte were basically the same thing In NET, characters are Unicode and can be anywhere from 8-32 bits per character This is where encoding comes into play
  • How do I initialize a byte array in Java? - Stack Overflow
In Java 6, there is a method doing exactly what you want: private static final byte[] CDRIVES = javax xml bind DatatypeConverter parseHexBinary
  • How many characters can you store with 1 byte? - Stack Overflow
1 byte = 8 bits So, does this mean 1 byte can only hold one character? E g : "16" uses 2 bytes , "9" uses 1 byte , "a" uses 1 byte, "b" uses 1 byte and if tiny int has range of 0-255, does this mean it can be stored with 255 char? what is storage of 1 tiny int (1) 2 tiny int (2) what will be the range 0-10
  • Why is the range of bytes -128 to 127 in Java? - Stack Overflow
Without getting into two's complement: 2^8 (since a byte is 8 digits and can have 1 of 2 values) = 256, so the most individual values a byte can represent is 256 so, representing the numbers -128 to -1 is half our range I believe the question here is why is the max positive value 127 rather than 128
  • binary - Why does a byte only have 0 to 255? - Stack Overflow
Strictly speaking, the term "byte" can actually refer to a unit with other than 256 values It's just that that's the almost universal size From Wikipedia: Historically, a byte was the number of bits used to encode a single character of text in a computer and it is for this reason the basic addressable element in many computer architectures

  • java byte data type - Stack Overflow
byte: The byte data type is an 8-bit signed two's complement integer It has a minimum value of -128 and a maximum value of 127 (inclusive) The byte data type can be useful for saving memory in large arrays, where the memory savings actually matters
  • How to convert byte[] to Byte[] and the other way around?
Step back Look at the bigger picture You're stuck converting byte[] to Byte[] or vice versa because of Java's strict type casing with something like this List< Byte> or List<Byte[]> Now you have byte[] and Byte[] and have to convert This will help Keep all your byte[]s in a list like this: List<byte[]> instead of List< Byte> or List<Byte[]>
  • Convert byte to string in Java - Stack Overflow
Because gustafc's answer has a very important point: String(byte[]) constructor uses the System default encoding to convert the byte array into String characters One should not assume that a 0x63 byte value is mapped to the letter 'c' For example, in UTF-16 the letter 'c' is represented by 2 encoding bytes, not one
